In this tutorial, we will see how to boost up the performance of the new Microsoft OS. Look no further, all the best tricks are gathered here. Hard disk, memory, system, everything will be reviewed.

Before making any changes in the registry, it is recommended to save its register.

Block Windows kernel in RAM

The trick is to set the RAM to take charge of the Windows Vista kernel, not that it is stored on the hard disk. Indeed, it is generally the system files that Vista virtual memory cache which are widely used. It is therefore necessary to make access faster by placing them in memory:

  • Open the register, typing regedit in the Start menu;
  • Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ SessionManager \ memoryManager;
  • Double-click the value DisablePagingExecutive;
  • Give him then the value 1 instead of 0;

Maximize RAM with a USB key

A new feature of Vista is to use a USB key, provided that it is fast and with a capacity exceeding 1 GB, support for virtual memory by acting as an extension of RAM. This technology called ReadyBoost lets in optimal conditions to win between 10 and 30% of performance, but this remains very uncertain.
However, anything that can boost the system is good to take, then proceed as follows:

  • Connect a USB key and expect it to be recognized;
  • Click Accelerate my system using Windows ReadyBoost in the window to run automatically (if it does not appear, open the Computer and right click Properties and then the ReadyBoost tab;
  • Check use this device and set the space to use on the key knowing that it is better to set up all the space available;
  • Confirm by clicking OK;
  • The space defined is now locked but you can still store your files to free space;
  • To get space on the key, return to the same menu in the ReadyBoost tab and check Do not use this device;

Note that this trick is valid for all removable devices and thus the SD cards (provided it has a card reader).

Adjust virtual memory

When Windows runs out of RAM, the latter will then dip into virtual memory or swap file. The access time is, of course, longer but this will effectively relieve the system.

To set virtual memory, open the Control Panel and select the System module and then click Advanced System Settings. Click Settings in the Performance section. A window appears entitled Performance Options. Open the Advanced tab and then click Edit in the Virtual Memory section. Another window opens in which you can also set virtual memory.
For optimum performance, we must define the swap file on the hard disk, the fastest in case you have several, or on a dedicated partition, although in this case, the performances are lower than in the first case.
Otherwise, uncheck Automatically manage paging file for all readers. Then select the fastest player and tick size managed by the system. Confirm by clicking Set.
You can also specify a custom size. For the initial size, multiply by 1.5 value of your physical memory (eg, 1 024 MB of RAM gives 1.5 per 1 536 MB). For the size, double the value of the initial size (in our example, 3 072 MB). Confirm by clicking OK and then click Set. Restart the computer to confirm the changes.

Turn off unnecessary services

Many services, enabled by default, seek unnecessary memory. Disable those without further delay and without any risk:

  • In Control Panel, open the Administrative Tools and double-click Services or directly type services.msc in the Start menu of Vista;
  • To disable a service, follow these steps: Double-click the service you want, then in the Startup Type field, choose Off;

Here is the list of services that can be disabled:

  • IIS Administration;
  • Smart card;
  • Configuring Server Terminal Services;
  • Parental control;
  • Register at a distance;
  • DFS replication;
  • Service Input Panel Tablet PC (except for a tablet PC);
  • Exit strategy of the smart card;
  • Fax;
  • Telephony;

Other services can be disabled or even increased in manual mode, however different choices depending on the working environment (network, for example). Act prudently!

Adjust the visual settings

The new 3D Aero interface of Windows Vista is extremely greedy and resources, particularly in video memory, defined by your graphics card (128 MB is a minimum).

To save performance, while reducing the graphics quality, open the Control Panel and then double-click the System icon. In the left pane, click Advanced System Settings. If the UAC warning appears, click Continue. The System Properties will appear. Go to the Advanced Settings tab system. Click the Settings button in the Performance section. Here, choose Just to get the best performance. Confirm by clicking OK.

You can also choose the best possible appearance or to fine tune every detail graphic.

Manage fonts

As in earlier systems, Windows Vista is full of hundreds of fonts in a folder fonts while most of them are unknown to us because few customary. You can turn off those who do useless:

  • Create a folder called Fonts or Backup, for example;
  • Open the Control Panel and open the Fonts module;
  • Select all policies except those that you use in your personal documents and those that Windows needs such as Arial, Calibri, Courier, Lucida Console, Sego IU, Times New Roman font and starting with MS;
  • Sliding into your previously created;

Remove unnecessary components

By default, Windows Vista comes with a lot of components that you probably never utilize. To eliminate them, open the Control Panel, select Programs and Features. In the left pane, click Enable or disable Windows features. Here you can uncheck what you seem unnecessary. In case of misuse, you can reactivate simply by ticking again.

Unload DLLs Registry

The applications use what is called DLL files which are often unnecessarily in memory. Nonetheless, it is a small handling in the registry will allow us to reverse the situation:

  • Open regedit;
  • Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \
    CurrentVersion \ Explorer.
  • Create a new DWORD 32-bit via the Edit menu or right click that you could name AlwaysUnloadDll;
  • Give it to 1.

Now, DLLs will be unloaded at the close of applications winner and responsiveness of the system.

Remove the Boot

Inherited Windows XP, this command is planning to defragment some files each time you start the computer. But this is completely useless unless you do not defrag what is essential.

Follow these steps to disable this mini-defragmentation:

  • Open regedit;
  • Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Dfrg \ BootOptimizeFunction;
  • Double-click the Enable value chain;
  • Replace a Y N;

Closing faster

Here are three keys to small change to stop the near-instantaneous system. Again, we pass by the register:

  • Open regedit;
  • Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ Memory Management;
  • Edit DWORD Value ClearPageFileAtShutdown putting 0 instead 1;
  • Appointment now to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control;
  • Double-click WaitToKillServiceTimeout and replace value 20 000 (default) 1 000. These values are expressed in milliseconds and determine the time that Windows needs to stop each process);
  • Finally, select HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop;
  • Create a new value chain entitled AutoEndTasks and set it to 1;

After you change these values, Windows will close very quickly without checking if it remains open files unregistered, thus caution.

    hello,

    me I have a question concernat setting up the RAM.

    I have read this trick that I've followed:

    configuration of your RAM

    Here is a trick very well for quick set your RAM

    It is perhaps not known but some we may never set.

    Go to the registry.

    Ie "Start / Run / (and type) Regedit / (and) Enter"

    In the new window opens, place the tree like this:

    Follow the letter: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / System / Current Control Set /
    Control / Session Manager / Memory Management "

    Create the value Dword IoPageLockLimit (unless it already exists) and put the X in Hexadecimal.

    "X" = 4000 for 128 MB of RAM

    "X" = 8000 for 160 MB of RAM

    "X" = 10000 for 256 MB of RAM

    "X" = 20000 for 512 MB of RAM

    "X" = 40000 for 1024MB RAM

    my qustion is this what value should I save if my RAM is 704 MB

    a bientot

    Hello and thank you for helping this trick by posting additional.

    However, after some research on the net and in the press, I am somewhat divided in terms of its effectiveness: some speak of a myth of a different reality.

    Anyway, I have already used this trick, and this is the method of calculation:

    Between 64 and 512 MB of RAM: it takes subtract 16 MB to your total amount of RAM before converting to hex.

    From 512 MB, subtract 64 MB to your total amount of RAM before converting to hex.

    Example with 512 MB:

    512 - 64 = 448 (subtracting the amount of RAM total with 64)
    448 * 1024 = 458752 (it converts megabytes in kilobytes)
    458752 = 70000

    The calculation is obtained in decimal value. It must enter this value by checking the box for the decimal key issue, the conversion hexadecimal performed automatically. Namely, the Windows calculator very well in scientific mode, available in the View menu.

    So to answer your question, 704 MB RAM, the calculation is as follows:
    704 - 64 = 640
    640 * 1024 = 655360

    As against, many sites have already published this trick recommends having at least 1 GB of memory although it can still put in place to lower values.

    PS: your values must be wrong because I have not found anywhere such numbers. Perhaps you would specify a source?

    Hello,
    Small note about fonts "overpaid":
    Fonts with Vista can not be displaced but simply copied. So small tip,
    - Create a folder as described then
    - Copy all the Fonts folder in the Windows folder create
    - Remove unnecessary fonts in the file origin
    Note: Me on certain fonts could not be deleted (again only option) but I'm still increased by nearly 400 fonts to 156 ca ca will remain under load.

  6. Maigret said:

    @ Yoyovento: police increased from 400 to 156, the gain will be real in Word or OpenOffice Writer for example. ;)

    Bravo Yoyovento for daring to sort ...

    With regard to the location of the virtual memory, I am inspired by what I learned here there. On my computer "Acer" I formatted and made visible the hidden partition of origin used in the restoration of the system failure (of course I waited until the warranty lapses). This partition al'interet to be at the root of the disk, so at the point where reading and writing are easier and faster. I also placed on a partition "Temporary Internet Files" and all temporary files, including cookies.
    Suffice it to say that thanks to this system partition my C: \ almost not moving.

    @ Lion77 is a good idea that you share. It will try one of these days ... : cool:

    I think there is a mistake at the last trick. You explain that the stopping time of programs in seconds while it is in milliseconds.
    Otherwise very good tips to accelerate Vista. Thank you

  10. Lion77 said:

    The main difficulty is to find or create a partition before being geographically C: \ (the one before you install Windows. It seems impossible when you install Vista. I see only one solution: use Acronis Partition Suite or Acronis Disk Director or equivalent

  11. Maigret said:

    @ Ciryl: seen thank you! ;)

    @ Lion77: at least we can do something with the live CD Gparted good ... but then I do not know.

  12. Lion77 said:

    I do not know any of this log. "Live CD Gparted"

    Rectif: Acronis Disk Director is not at all, but Partition Suite is ad hoc.

    Stp How to place a message on my avatar like you or Cyril?

  13. Maigret said:

    Lion @ 77: Gparted is a partitioning on Linux. You can use it as a Live CD - without installing therefore, resize, delete partitions and reduce all for free.

    Attention, however, do not use it lightly, a false manipulation is so fast here!

    It is actually a gravatar. The principle is simple: you set an email address on the site http://fr.gravatar.com/ then you will associate the image of your choice. This is very useful because it is recognized on all WordPress blogs, the company Automattic which bought the system.
